Your vintage must-haves – 50’s Sabrina Neckline Dress

A few months have left since my last post of this series. So it’s about time for another part and todays must-have is related to the one and only Audrey Hepburn.

Besides being an actress and a humanitarian, Audrey Hepburn was one of the greatest fashion icons of the 20th century. Since the beginning of her career, she was always involved into her costuming and in 1953, she became life long friends with the fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy, who clothed her in a lot of her movies but also in her private life.

“Audrey simply knew what clothes suited her and her character, and she had a calm confidence in her sartorial choices that she did not always have in her own talent.” – Donald Spoto

Some of her most famous costumes are the black dress from “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” (1961) and the amazing black and white floral dress from “Sabrina” (1954), which were both designed by Givenchy himself. But in this blog post, I want to talk about another beautiful dress by Givenchy which became very popular in the 1950’s and is definitely one of my vintage must-haves, especially when you’re an Audrey Hepburn fan. It’s the Sabrina neckline dress, today it’s also known as the Audrey Swing dress in many vintage clothing stores (or as the Bateau neckline dress).

“Hepburn was drawn to the Sabrina neckline dress ‘because it hid her skinny collarbone but emphasized her very good shoulders.'” – Hubert de Givenchy to “Vanity Fair”

Audrey wore this dress, a black satin version, in the movie “Sabrina” and that’s the reason why Givenchy called it the Sabrina neckline or in french decolette Sabrina. It exists in many different colors and patterns, so there’s something for everyone. If you want to get your own Sabrina Neckline Dress, I can recommend you shops like LindyBop, Dolly&Doty but also Etsy and Amazon.

“She was ‘the role model for that period [1950’s]. She became the ambassador for well-dressed woman of the period.'” – Sean Hepburn Ferrer, Audrey’s son

I myself have two of these beautiful dresses so far and they’re both from Amazon. The price was affordable and the dresses well-made. But convince yourself with the following photographs!

I think the Sabrina Neckline Dress is simple, classy and absolutely timeless. Therefore a great addition to everyone’s wardrobe.

That’s it for today! I hope you enjoyed this post. See you soon,

Your Shirinatra xx
