The colder days are coming slowly and what does that mean for me? Right, spending more time watching series while drinking coffee and eating lots of biscuits. Therefore I thought it would be a marvelous idea to make a list of my favorite series which are set in the past. So here we go!
Downton Abbey (2010-2015)
Genre: Drama, Romance
Cast: Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith and many other
It’s set in the early 20th century and chronicles the life of the british aristocratic Crawley family.
I was enamored right from the beginning and so sad when it was over. If you love drama and romance then you can’t go wrong with this series. The cast couldn’t be any better and the scenery and the costumes are breathtaking.
The Last Tycoon (2016-)
Cast: Lily Collins, Matt Bomer, Kelsey Grammer, Dominique McElligott and many other
It’s based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Last Tycoon” and it centers Monroe Stahr, who’s a studio executive in Hollywood, in the 1930’s.
I can only recommend it to everyone who’s in love with this book, this period and/or Old Hollywood. The actors and actresses are fantastic, the costumes and production designs are authentic and all in all, it gives you a big insight into the Hollywood of back then. I especially love Lily Collins who’s one of my favorite actresses.
Genre: Drama, Fantasy
Cast: Adelaide Kane, Megan Follows, Toby Regbo, Rachel Skarsten and many more
It’s mainly about the young Mary Stuart, the Queen of Scots, and her rise to power. At the age of 15, she comes to the french court to marry Prince Francis and that’s how the story begins.
They added a lot of characters that didn’t exist back then and the costumes are not always authentic, but even though this series is not always truthful, it’s a great entertaining. So if you want to watch something captivating and thrilling with a whiff of history, this is your series!
Mad Men (2007-2015)
Cast: Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Vincet Kartheiser, January Jones, Christina Hendricks and many more
It’s set in New York in the early 1960’s and is about the fictional advertising agency Sterling Cooper which is on the Madison Avenue.
I only watched a few episodes, so I can’t say a lot about this series but if you love the 1960’s, you should definitely give it a go!
Genre: Biography, Drama, History
Cast: Jenna Coleman, Daniela Holtz, Catherine Flemming, Rufus Sewell and many others
It’s about Queen Victoria’s early life. From her coronation at the young age of 18 to her marriage with Prince Albert.
Since I’ve always been very interested into the british history and the aristocracy, I immediately had to watch it after hearing about it. Jenna Coleman is such a wonderful Victoria and I’m so excited for more episodes and seasons. And you should definitely watch it too.
Z: The Beginning of Everything (2015-)
Genre: Biography, Drama
Cast: Christina Ricci, David Hoflin, Kristine Nielsen, David Strathairn and many more
It’s a biography based on the life of Zelda Fitzgerald who became the original flapper and an icon of the Jazz Age in the 1920’s.
Since F. Scott Fitzgerald is one of my favorite authors, I was excited to learn more about him and especially his wife Zelda, who’s the center of the series. It shows the ups and downs of their tumultuous marriage and it’s definitely a must-watch for every Fitzgerald admirer or basically for everyone who’s interested into the early 20th century!
Genre: Action, Drama, History
Cast: Travis Fimmel, Clive Standen, Katheryn Winnick, Alexander Ludwig, Gustav Skarsgård and many others
It’s about the life of Ragnar Lothbrok, the first Viking who sailed into the west.
I’m watching this series with my boyfriend and after I was a bit sceptical at the beginning, we couldn’t stop watching it. It’s for sure absolutely different to all the other series of my list, maybe that’s why I enjoy it so much! Plus, you also learn a lot about the Vikings and their life back then, which is very interesting.
After creating this list, I realized that I really like to watch dramas haha. Anyway, I hope I could give you some inspiration for your next series-marathon 😛 I also planned to make a list of my favorite sitcoms (which will be without any Drama, hopefully :D). Lots of love,
Your Shirinatra xx
