Your vintage must-haves – 50’s hoop earrings

Since I expand my Vintage Fashion Collection, I thought it would be a marvelous idea to make a Vintage must-haves series. Today I want to start with some accessories, because after all they make an outfit perfectly vintage. And besides, they help us to create a very unique look.

So my accessories of the day are the hoop earrings, which have been very popular in the 1950’s, apart from pearl and diamond earrings. Of course we all know the large slim hoop earrings. They are still in vogue these days and nearly everyone owns a pair. But back then, the earrings (mostley) looked a bit different. The ones from the 50’s have wider hoops and they are fixed on 8-12mm or smaller stud tops. Moreover, they exist in various material, colors and textures.

Famous actresses from Old Hollywood absolutely loved to wear them. One of the best examples is Marilyn Monroe. She wore them in two of her movies, “Gentleman Prefer Blondes” and “Niagara”, both shot in 1953.

While talking about hoop earrings, you also shouldn’t forget the fashion icon Audrey Hepburn. She not only wore them in the movie “Sabrina” but also in her freetime. When you look through her photographs from the early 1950’s, you often see her with these goodies. Another interesting fact is that she never pierced her ears, so she only had clip on earrings.

Also Lauren Bacall (seen here with her husband Humphrey Bogart) and the italian actress Sophia Loren (seen here on the set of “Boccaccio 70”) owned a lovely pair of them.

After seeing these amazing and inspiring ladies, I didn’t need any more arguments to buy my own 50’s hoop earrings. I desperately wanted to wear them as well and so I searched for some great replicas on the Internet. Fortunately, I found the perfect ones at “Bow & Crossbones“, which is a shop for repro vintage accessories. They also have many other beautiful jewellery but I fell in love with the “Marilyn hoop earrings“, which look a lot like the ones Marilyn Monroe had. And the best thing is, they’re not too expensive even though they may look like it. In my opinion another reason, to let them be a part of your Vintage Fashion Collection and to call them a must-have.

The “Marilyn hoop earrings” with the 8mm Stud tops from Bow & Crossbones for only 8,95€.

I was totally amazed how classy they look and I wore them nearly everyday since I received them. Since I have (more or less) small ears, I always had problems with big earrings but they are not heavy which is really nice. Also, I would say they are just timeless. You can wear them with a sweet petticoat but also with a jeans and a leather jacket and I think that’s what a good accessoires is about – you can combine it with everything.

Of course, I couldn’t resist taking some photographs with them. So here they are πŸ™‚

Altogether, I just want to say that the hoop earrings are a must-have for every 50’s fashion lover. No matter if they are gold or silver, big or small – they make your outfit glamorous and more vintage. And maybe they help you to feel more like Marilyn or Audrey. Because I have to admit, I feel more Audreyesque with them πŸ˜›

If you have any questions relating to the earrings or if you have any ideas for my next blogpost, just let me know! I hope you enjoyed reading my first blogpost of the Vintage must-have series. See you next time. Lots of love,

Your Shirinatra xx
